AirPods 5 are Apple’s new mainstream open-ear earbuds for 2026. They start at $129 in the U.S. and bring Active Noise Cancellation to Apple’s most affordable current AirPods, alongside a redesigned acoustic system, Adaptive EQ, improved durability and deeper Siri AI integration.
The key question is whether that combination makes them the AirPods most people should buy — or whether the $149 Wireless Charging Case version or AirPods Pro are worth the step up.
AirPods 5: quick verdict
On paper, AirPods 5 make the strongest case for iPhone users who prefer an open-ear fit and want modern AirPods features without paying Pro-level pricing. The headline upgrade is ANC: Apple says the new system removes up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. Because this is still an open-ear design, buyers who want maximum isolation should compare them with in-ear AirPods Pro before deciding.
Price and the two AirPods 5 versions
| Model | U.S. price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5 | $129 | Lowest-cost entry to the new generation |
| AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case | $149 | Wireless charging, longer battery life and on-stem volume control |
The $20 difference is important. Apple reserves several practical extras for the Wireless Charging Case model, including volume swipe on the stem and a case that supports Apple Watch chargers, Qi-compatible chargers and USB-C.
Open-ear ANC is the big upgrade
AirPods 5 use a new multiport acoustic architecture and updated computational audio. Apple says their Active Noise Cancellation can remove up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. Transparency mode is also designed to sound more natural, while Adaptive Audio automatically blends noise cancellation and transparency depending on the environment.
That is especially interesting for buyers who dislike silicone ear tips. The trade-off is fundamental: an open-ear design does not physically seal the ear canal, so the experience is different from traditional in-ear noise-isolating earbuds.
Sound quality
Apple has reworked the acoustic system with a new multiport design and next-generation Adaptive EQ. The goal is richer, more detailed sound across a wider variety of ear shapes. Personalized Spatial Audio remains part of the experience for compatible Apple devices.
Battery life
Apple rates AirPods 5 with the Wireless Charging Case at up to five hours of listening with ANC on a single charge, extending to up to 22 hours with the case. Actual endurance will depend on volume, ANC use, calls, features and device settings.
Siri AI and Live Translation
AirPods 5 are also becoming an AI accessory. With a compatible iPhone and supported software, Apple is integrating hands-free Siri AI, head-gesture responses and Live Translation. Feature, language and regional availability can vary, and some functions require an Apple Intelligence-capable device.
Durability and everyday use
Apple says the new generation improves resistance to dust, sweat and water compared with previous models. That makes AirPods 5 more relevant for commuting and workouts, although buyers primarily focused on exercise should also consider purpose-built workout headphones and fit stability.
Who should buy AirPods 5?
- Buy them if: you use an iPhone, prefer an open-ear fit, want ANC and want to stay near the $129–$149 range.
- Choose the $149 version if: wireless charging, longer battery life and on-stem volume control matter to you.
- Compare AirPods Pro first if: maximum noise isolation and an in-ear seal are priorities.
- Look beyond AirPods if: you mainly need secure workout fit, very long battery life or cross-platform features.
Bottom line
AirPods 5 look like Apple’s most compelling mainstream AirPods generation in years because ANC is no longer reserved for a more expensive configuration. At $129, the standard model targets value; at $149, the Wireless Charging Case version adds enough everyday conveniences to be the more complete package for many iPhone owners.
