Start here: 5 checks in order
- Confirm the quieter side. Use a familiar track at a comfortable volume.
- Check charge status. Make sure both AirPods are actually receiving power.
- Inspect the speaker mesh. Look for visible debris before changing settings.
- Check left/right balance. Make sure the balance control is centered.
- Retest in another app or track. Rule out a source-specific issue.
If the same AirPod is still quieter after these checks, stop compensating with extra volume and move to Apple’s model-specific support or service route.
When one AirPod is quieter, first establish whether it plays sound at all, whether it is charging, and whether the imbalance follows the same earbud across ordinary listening. Check these basics before increasing the volume or assuming that a replacement is necessary.

If there is no sound
Start with charging and connection. A silent earbud is a different problem from an earbud that still plays but sounds quieter.
If it is only quieter
Prioritize visible debris, left/right balance, fit and source-specific settings before resetting the AirPods.
Find your symptom first
| What you notice | Check first | Then |
|---|---|---|
| One earbud produces no sound | Confirm charge status | Follow Apple’s no-sound procedure |
| Both play, but one is quieter | Inspect speaker mesh and balance | Clean correctly, then retest |
| Only one app sounds unbalanced | Try another familiar source | Check that app’s settings |
| The difference changes with positioning | Check fit and ear tips | Retest with a secure seal |
| The fault remains after basic checks | Note model and completed steps | Use Apple support/service |
Important: a charging problem and a blocked speaker mesh can feel almost identical during a quick listen. Diagnose one variable at a time.
1. Verify both AirPods are receiving power
Apple’s no-sound guidance asks you to check the case and the charge status of each earbud. Place both in the charged case, then inspect the individual status using a supported connected device.
Good sign
Both earbuds show charge and the quieter AirPod still plays audio.
Stop here if…
The affected AirPod is not charging. Solve that issue before troubleshooting volume balance.
If the affected AirPod is not charging, focus on that problem first. Follow the case’s cleaning and support instructions, and avoid poking its contacts with a sharp object. A playback reset cannot prove that an earbud with no power has recovered.
2. Inspect the speaker mesh
Apple’s quiet-earbud guidance points to inspecting microphone and speaker meshes and using the model’s cleaning instructions when debris is present. AirPods and AirPods Pro have different diagrams and procedures, so identify the pair before applying a cleaning method.
Cleaning rule
- Use the instructions for your exact AirPods model.
- Do not push debris deeper into the mesh.
- Do not improvise with solvents or sharp tools.
- Respect any drying time before returning the earbuds to the case.
3. Check left/right audio balance
On iPhone, Apple’s guide directs you to the balance control under Accessibility, Audio & Visual and asks that it be centered for this check. Record any intentional accessibility settings before changing them so you can restore your preferred configuration later.
Quick check: Settings → Accessibility → Audio & Visual → Balance. For troubleshooting, the slider should be centered.
4. Rule out the song or app
Try a second familiar track or app. A single recording with unequal left and right content is not a useful basis for declaring a hardware imbalance. Likewise, a setting in one application may not represent the phone’s general output.
If another app sounds normal
Investigate the first app, its EQ, accessibility or playback settings before resetting the earbuds.
If the same side stays quieter
The evidence points back toward the AirPod, fit, balance or another device-level issue.
5. Retest before resetting
- Confirm power and the affected side.
- Check visible debris using the exact model’s cleaning guide.
- Review balance and relevant app settings.
- Compare familiar content after each change.
- Save the results if the issue persists.
Apple provides model-specific reset and replacement setup guidance when appropriate. Use those instructions after the relevant basic checks, rather than repeatedly resetting without a clear result.
When to stop troubleshooting
If the same AirPod remains quieter after charging, cleaning, balance and source checks, a service assessment is more informative than compensating indefinitely with increased volume.
