QGH review methodology: This is a research-based editorial review of a gadget launched in 2026. QGH has not tested a review unit. Specifications and manufacturer claims were checked on October 6, 2026; performance, comfort and battery life have not been independently measured. Our score assesses the documented feature mix and buyer fit, not measured performance.
The ROG Kithara is a new 2026 gaming headset for a specific environment: a desk where wired audio and an open-back design are welcome. That makes it an interesting specialist choice, but a poor default for every gamer. Our verdict is to shortlist it only after checking your room, device connections and comfort priorities.
Confirmed as a new CES 2026 headset
ASUS announced ROG Kithara on January 6, 2026. The U.S. specification page showed a $299.99 reference price and $229.99 promotional price when checked on October 6. Other regional pages and promotions may differ. We use the reference price to avoid treating a temporary sale as a permanent property of the product.
The room matters as much as the drivers
ASUS documents 100mm HIFIMAN planar magnetic drivers and an open-back construction. Its specification lists wired operation, no active noise cancellation and 420g weight. Those facts describe the design, not our listening or microphone results.
Our inference is that a shared or noisy room should be a stopping point before an impulse purchase. An open-back headset is not intended to provide the same acoustic separation as a sealed design. If people nearby need quiet, or your environment is distracting, investigate that mismatch first. A claimed sense of space cannot compensate for choosing the wrong type of headset for the room.
Check both playback and voice connections
The documented cable set includes headphone plugs for 3.5mm, 6.3mm and balanced 4.4mm use, a boom-mic cable and a USB-C-to-dual-3.5mm adapter. Audio output and microphone input are separate compatibility questions. A headphone plug fitting a DAC does not establish a working voice-chat path.
Trace the full connection from your PC or console to the headset. Identify which cable carries the microphone, whether an adapter is needed and how you will adjust chat levels. Our gaming setup guide helps plan the surrounding accessories. For a console-centered setup, the Nintendo Switch 2 review provides related platform context; verify headset connections separately.
A specialist upgrade, not an automatic advantage
We have not evaluated positional cues, microphone clarity, tonal balance or long-session comfort. Planar drivers are a construction choice, not proof that you will hear opponents better or prefer the sound. The useful buying question is whether this design solves a limitation in your current desk setup.
Shortlist Kithara if you specifically want wired open-back audio, understand the connection path and can check the fit. Skip it if you need isolation, wireless movement or a lighter headset without first examining alternatives. Keep an existing headset when it already meets those needs. At the reference price, Kithara asks you to commit to a deliberate audio setup; its appeal is strongest when that commitment matches how and where you play.
QGH editorial score: 3.9/5
Documented features 4.4/5 for the specialist driver and cable package; compatibility 4.2/5 with connection-path checks; ownership fit 3.4/5 for weight and room constraints; value 3.6/5 at the reference price. Equal-weight average: 3.9/5.
The four criteria carry equal weight. A higher number indicates a stronger documented buying proposition for the stated audience. It is not a laboratory result, a customer-review average or an independent validation of manufacturer claims.
Is ROG Kithara a wireless noise-canceling headset?
No. ASUS specifies wired operation, an open-back design and no active noise cancellation.
